back in my Anusara yoga days, I learned how to apply muscle energy,

but balance that with organic energy.  bridge pose, or in sanskrit, 

setu bandha sarvangasana, is an amazing combination of both.  

the muscle energy is on the back side of your body... think glutes, back muscles, rhomboids between the shoulder blades, and others.

it amazes me how often we search for a fix to something that hurts in all the wrong places.  a pill, a stretch, a diagnosis, a weight-bearing move, too little movement, ice too late... you get the idea.

gomukhasana, our cow face pose, is a challenger, but oh so nice for the hips.

this pose asks us to listen to our body, so that we know how to get into these 'pretzel-like legs', without harm to the hips, knees and ankles.

so my first suggestion is try this on your back!

it's been a while, and a lot has changed.  my father passed in May after his brave fight of lung cancer. my mom, absorbed by dementia, lived under our roof, until it was not safe for her to be with us.  she is in a lovely place nearby, with more care than we could provide.

a friend once told me that caregiving is like a freight train... it moves really fast and very furious....

it is my 'go-to' to start my day and get myself feeling more awake and alive.  

since spring has been so indecisive, here is one that can help bring some

heat to your hips and a little opening to your heart.

ahhhhhh......the elusive forward bends,

where our mind and ego set the bar high,

and our body keeps it real, hopefully.

it's the practice of 'ahimsa', meaning kindness.

go ahead and set the bar high (if you must...must you?),

but keep expectations real.
